Am I legally required to have fire safety equipment in my home in Malaysia?

No. Unlike businesses, which must meet Fire Services Act requirements, individual homeowners in Malaysia are not legally mandated to own a fire extinguisher or smoke detector. Some strata-managed condos have their own building-level requirements set by the JMB, but that is separate from what a resident chooses to keep inside their own unit.

How much does it cost to properly fire-safety a Malaysian home?

Based on current pricing, a 3kg ABC dry powder extinguisher and a fire blanket each cost RM90, putting the core setup at roughly RM180 before adding a smoke detector. Bundle pricing is typically cheaper than buying each item separately.

What is the difference between a 1kg and a 3kg fire extinguisher for home use?

Both are SIRIM-tested and Bomba-approved. The 1kg extinguisher is compact, around 29cm tall, and suits kitchens, apartments, or cars, rated to put out a 5A/21B fire in about 3 seconds. The 3kg extinguisher is rated against larger 13A:55B fires and suits landed homes, garages, or workshops where extra coverage matters more than portability.

How often should a home's fire safety setup be checked?

Twice a year is a reasonable minimum: test smoke detector batteries, check the fire extinguisher's pressure gauge, and confirm escape routes are not blocked.

How to use the extinguisher

Remember P.A.S.S. If the fire is larger than you are, leave and call 999.

Pull the pin

Pull the safety pin out of the handle.

Aim at the base

Point the nozzle at the base of the fire, not the flames.

Squeeze the handle

Squeeze slowly and evenly to release the powder.

Sweep side to side

Sweep across the base until the fire is out.

Is the Plus the right kit for my home?

The Plus suits homes of 1,500 to 3,500 sqft with 3 to 4 rooms and 2 cars, such as a double-storey terrace or a large condo. For under 1,500 sqft with 1 to 2 rooms and 1 car, the Basic is enough. For over 3,500 sqft or more than 4 rooms, choose the Pro.

I live in a single-storey house or a condo. Does the Plus still work?

Yes. Put one 3kg extinguisher near the kitchen and living hall, and the other near the bedrooms, each close to a way out. Fit one smoke detector in the living hall and one outside the bedrooms.

Do the extinguishers need yearly servicing?

Not for home use. Check the pressure gauge now and then and make sure the needle stays in the green band. Commercial and workplace units need annual servicing to keep a BOMBA licence valid.

How long do the products last?

The extinguishers have a shelf life of about 12 years and can be refilled after use. The Smoke Detector PLUS has a 10-year lifespan. The fire blanket is for one use, so replace it after a fire.

When will my kit arrive?

Is there a warranty?

Yes, a 1-year manufacturer warranty. If there is a manufacturing problem with any item, send it back and we will replace it.
