Fire safety is important, so much so that fire extinguishers is regulated in all business premises under the Universal Building By Law (UBBL) of Malaysia. The next question is, how many fire extinguishers do you need for your business?
The guide below will help you identify the number of units of extinguishers needed, as well as the type of extinguishers.
There are 2 things that you need to consider:
1. Size matters!
(General guide: 1 unit of 9kg fire extinguisher for every 500sq ft of space)
Especially where fire safety is concerned. The number of fire extinguishers that your business requires is based on the square footage of your premise and also the extinguishing power of the fire extinguisher - which is determined by its “Fire Rating”.
The “Fire Ratings” are easily identifiable on a fire extinguisher. They are usually found on the bottom left corner of the extinguisher. It looks like this:
The most common fire extinguisher - 9kg ABC Dry Powder as seen in the picture above has a rating of 27A. “A” refers to the class of fire the extinguisher is designed for and “27” refers to the size of the material that can be repeatedly extinguished. The higher the number, the larger the fire it can extinguish.
Let’s assume the chosen extinguisher for your business has a fire rating of 27A (it will vary based on the type of extinguisher chosen), now you will need to know what is the “Fire Rating” of your space. This calculation is derived from the area of the space (in square meter) multiplied by the value of 0.065.
2. Nature of your Business
(General guide: 9kg ABC Dry Powder is suitable for most cases unless it's being placed in an area with alot of electrical components - i.e. a server /computer room)

The amount of fire extinguishers that you need doesn’t just depend on the size of your premise, but the nature of your business as well. This goes back to the “Fire Ratings” and Classes of Fire as mentioned above.
For example, if you’re in the business of selling or using a lot of electrical items, it would be advised to get the CO2 fire extinguisher as it is designed to combat electrical fires. With that said, you are advised to get a mixture of different types of fire extinguishers.

2. The the 9kg ABC Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher is the most universal fire extinguisher for business . If your business has electronic machinery or a server room, a 2kg CO2 Fire Extinguisher is recommended.
