CO2 vs ABC Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher: Which One Does Your Workplace Need?

Quick answer: use CO2 where the main risk is electrical equipment you don't want to damage: server rooms, IT cabinets, electrical rooms, DB boards, control panels and labs. Use ABC dry powder everywhere else. It works on burning solids, flammable liquids and electrical equipment, which makes it the general-purpose choice for offices, shops, warehouses and corridors. Most workplaces need both, each in the right place.

The Difference in One Table

CO2 (carbon dioxide) ABC dry powder
How it works Displaces the oxygen around the fire Smothers the fire with a fine powder that interrupts combustion
Burning solids (paper, wood, fabric: Class A) Poor: the fire can reignite once the gas disperses Effective
Flammable liquids (oil, solvents, fuel: Class B) Effective Effective
Electrical equipment Ideal: leaves no residue Effective, but leaves powder that's messy to clean and can damage electronics
Clean-up afterwards None: the gas simply disperses Powder settles over everything nearby
Best for Server rooms, electrical rooms, DB boards, control panels, labs General office areas, shops, warehouses, corridors, vehicles

When to Choose CO2

CO2 is the right choice wherever a fire is most likely to start in electrical equipment, and where powder would do almost as much damage as the fire. Fire Fighter Industry's CO2 extinguishers are harmless to delicate electronics such as computers and servers, and leave no residue on nearby components. They're also effective on flammable liquids: oils, solvents, wax and spirits.

  • Server rooms, IT and comms cabinets
  • Electrical and switch rooms, DB boards and motor control panels
  • Laboratories, studios and broadcast or recording rooms
  • Next to POS systems, printers and copiers in an office or shop

Our 2kg CO2 extinguisher (RM158) and 5kg CO2 extinguisher (RM258, self collect) both include the Bomba licence application. For a larger server room or data room, a fixed clean-agent system protects the whole space automatically. See our Novec 1230 and FE13 suppression systems.

CO2's limitations

  • It's not for paper, cardboard or furniture fires. It may knock the flames down, but the material can reignite once the gas clears.
  • Short range. You need to get closer than with a powder extinguisher.
  • The horn gets extremely cold during discharge. Hold it only by the handle.
  • In a small, enclosed room, CO2 displaces the oxygen you breathe as well. Leave the room after use and ventilate it before anyone goes back in.

When to Choose ABC Dry Powder

ABC dry powder is the all-rounder. It handles burning solids, flammable liquids and electrical equipment, so it's the safest default where you can't predict what will burn: offices, retail floors, corridors, stores, warehouses, car parks and vehicles. For a full explanation, see what an ABC dry powder fire extinguisher is.

The trade-off is the mess. A discharged powder extinguisher covers the room in fine powder, which is why it's the wrong choice right next to servers and sensitive electronics.

What About Kitchens?

Neither is the main answer for commercial cooking oil fires. Restaurants and canteens need a wet chemical suppression system over the cooking line and a fire blanket at each station, with portable extinguishers for the rest of the premises. See our restaurant and cafe fire safety checklist and the wet chemical system.

A Simple Placement Plan for a Typical Office

Area Extinguisher
Main office floor, corridors, exits 9kg ABC dry powder
Server room or IT cabinet CO2 (or a fixed clean-agent system)
Electrical room or DB board CO2
Pantry Fire blanket, plus the nearest ABC extinguisher
Store room or archive 9kg ABC dry powder
Company vehicles 1kg or 3kg ABC dry powder

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CO2 or dry powder better for electrical fires?

CO2 is usually better for electrical equipment because it leaves no residue and won't damage electronics like servers and computers. ABC dry powder also works on electrical fires, but leaves powder that's messy to clean and can damage sensitive equipment.

Can a CO2 extinguisher be used on paper or wood fires?

It's not recommended. CO2 may knock the flames down, but burning solids like paper, cardboard and wood can reignite once the gas disperses. Use an ABC dry powder extinguisher instead.

Which fire extinguisher is best for a server room?

A CO2 extinguisher for portable cover, because it leaves no residue. Larger server rooms are often protected by a fixed clean-agent suppression system as well.

Is ABC dry powder suitable for an office?

Yes. ABC dry powder is the general-purpose choice for main office areas, corridors and store rooms. Add CO2 extinguishers near server cabinets, electrical rooms and DB boards.

Do CO2 fire extinguishers need a Bomba licence?

For commercial use, yes. Commercial extinguishers need a Bomba licence and a yearly service to renew it. Fire Fighter Industry's 2kg and 5kg CO2 extinguishers include the Bomba licence application.
