How Many Smoke Detectors Does a Malaysian Home Need?
Quick answer: at minimum, put one smoke detector inside every bedroom, one in the hallway or area just outside the bedrooms, and at least one on every floor of the house. For a typical 3-bedroom condo that's 4 detectors. For a double-storey terrace with 4 bedrooms it's around 6. Interconnect them so that when one goes off, they all do.
The Placement Rule
Our FF Smoke Detector PLUS FAQ sets out the rule:
- Inside each bedroom: many fatal home fires happen at night, and Malaysians often sleep with the door closed and the air-con on, which slows smoke reaching a detector outside.
- Outside each sleeping area: in the corridor or landing the bedrooms open onto.
- On every level: including the ground floor of a landed home, where the kitchen, living room and DB box usually are.
Count those spots in your own home and you have your minimum.
Worked Examples
| Home type | Where they go | Minimum detectors | FF PLUS cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio or 1-bedroom condo | Bedroom, plus living area or entrance | 2 | RM149 (pack of 2) |
| 3-bedroom condo or apartment | 3 bedrooms, plus the corridor outside them | 4 | RM289 (pack of 3 + 1) |
| Double-storey terrace, 4 bedrooms | 4 bedrooms, upstairs landing, ground-floor living area | 6 | RM420 (2 packs of 3) |
| Semi-D or bungalow, 5+ bedrooms, 2–3 floors | Every bedroom, every landing, every floor's main living area | 8 or more | Interconnect up to 24 units |
These are minimums from the placement rule, not an upper limit. Add one for a large living hall, a study or home office where you charge devices, a maid's room, or a store room with a lot of stored goods.
Where Not to Put Them
- Inside the kitchen itself: cooking smoke will set it off constantly, and a detector that keeps false-alarming tends to get taken down. Put it in the space just outside the kitchen instead. If you're unsure what suits a kitchen, see heat detector vs smoke detector.
- Right outside the bathroom door: shower steam can trigger nuisance alarms.
- Directly in front of an air-con or ceiling fan: moving air can blow smoke away from the sensor.
Already getting false alarms or chirping? Here's why your smoke detector keeps beeping.
Why Interconnection Matters More Than the Count
Six standalone detectors in a double-storey house still leave a gap. If a fire starts in the ground-floor living room at 2am, the detector downstairs sounds, but a family asleep upstairs with the doors shut and the air-con running may not hear it. Interconnected detectors fix that: when one senses smoke, every unit in the house sounds.
The FF Smoke Detector PLUS connects wirelessly with up to 24 units and needs no hub. It's 85 dB, runs on a sealed 10-year battery with nothing to replace, and lets you silence a false alarm with any infrared remote. Pairing steps are in the manual and setup guide.
What It Costs
The FF Smoke Detector PLUS is RM79 for one, RM149 for a pack of 2, and RM210 for a pack of 3. A full 3-bedroom condo setup comes to RM289, and a 4-bedroom double-storey terrace to RM420. With a 10-year battery, that's well under RM50 a year for the whole house.
Detectors only warn you. Pair them with something to fight a small fire: see how many fire extinguishers a Malaysian home needs, or our realistic budget for fire-safety-ing your home. For the reasons early warning matters so much, read do you really need a smoke detector in your home.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many smoke detectors do I need for a 3-bedroom condo?
At least 4: one inside each bedroom and one in the corridor outside them. Add another for a large living area if it's far from the bedrooms.
Do I need a smoke detector in every bedroom?
Yes, ideally. Many fatal home fires happen at night, and a closed bedroom door with the air-con running slows smoke reaching a detector outside the room.
Should I put a smoke detector in the kitchen?
Not inside the kitchen itself, because cooking smoke causes constant false alarms. Put it just outside the kitchen instead.
Is it compulsory to have smoke detectors in a Malaysian home?
There's generally no legal requirement for an existing private home to install them. Private dwellings are excluded from the Fire Certificate regime that applies to designated premises. They're still one of the cheapest, most effective safety upgrades you can make.
How many FF Smoke Detector PLUS units can be interconnected?
Up to 24 units, wirelessly, with no hub needed. When one detects smoke, they all sound.
