Balik Kampung Fire Safety Checklist: 10 Things to Do Before You Leave Home

Quick answer: before you lock up for Deepavali, Raya, CNY or the school holidays, unplug everything that doesn't need to stay on, don't leave anything charging, close the gas, check your DB box, and make sure someone nearby knows who to call. An empty house can't put out a small fire, and there's nobody to notice one starting. Here's the full 10-point checklist.

Why an Empty House Is a Different Risk

When you're home, most small fires get noticed early: you smell burning plastic, hear a breaker trip, or see smoke from the kitchen. When nobody's there for three, five or ten days, a fault that starts small has hours to grow before anyone sees it. That's why Bomba's festive-season reminders put the same advice first every year: switch off your electrical appliances before you leave.

Electrical faults are the leading cause of house fires in Malaysia. Our guide to why electrical faults cause most Malaysian house fires explains why. Most of this checklist is about reducing exactly that risk.

The 10-Point Checklist

1. Unplug, don't just switch off

Go room by room and pull the plugs on the TV, sound system, computer, microwave, rice cooker, air fryer, kettle, iron and hair dryer. A plug left in a socket with a worn or overheating adaptor is still a risk even when the appliance is "off." Switch off the water heater at its isolator switch too.

2. Leave nothing charging

Phones, power banks, laptops, vapes, e-scooters and e-bikes shouldn't be left on charge in an empty house. Lithium batteries can overheat and ignite with little warning, and a lithium fire is much harder to put out than an ordinary one. See lithium-ion vs regular fires. If any battery looks puffy or swollen, don't charge it at all before you leave. Read why batteries swell for what to do.

3. Check the fridge's plug and socket

The fridge is usually the one appliance that stays on. Make sure it's plugged directly into a wall socket rather than an extension or multi-plug adaptor, and that the plug and socket show no scorch marks or discolouration.

4. Look at your DB box before you go

If your distribution board has been tripping, buzzing, smelling hot or showing burn marks, get an electrician in before you travel, not after. A DB box fault in an empty house is a worst case. Here's how a DB box can catch fire and what to do about it. Some households also switch off the circuits they don't need, leaving only the fridge and any security system on. If you do, label which breaker is which before you leave.

5. Close the gas

Turn off the regulator valve on your LPG cylinder, or the gas supply valve if you're on piped gas. Check that no stove knob has been left slightly open.

6. Put out every flame: altar lights, oil lamps, candles and joss sticks

Festive seasons mean more open flames at home: oil lamps, candles, joss sticks, altar lights. Make sure every one is fully out before you leave, and don't leave any flame burning in an empty house "just for a few hours." If you keep electric altar lights on while you're away, plug them directly into a wall socket in good condition, not a tired extension cord.

7. Clear the kitchen and take out the rubbish

Move cooking oil, paper towels and plastic away from the stove, and take out the rubbish, especially anything greasy or anything with old batteries in it.

8. Test your smoke detector

Press the test button and make sure it sounds. On the FF Smoke Detector PLUS, press and hold TEST/SILENCE: the red LED flashes once, then it beeps three times. Be realistic about what a detector does in an empty house. It won't call you, but at 85 dB it gives anyone close by, such as a neighbour, a guard or a relative with a key, a chance to notice early. If you have more than one, the PLUS interconnects up to 24 units wirelessly, so smoke in the kitchen sets off the alarm nearest the front door too. If yours keeps chirping, sort that out first: why your smoke detector keeps beeping.

9. Check your extinguisher and tell someone where it is

Check that the pressure gauge needle is in the green (how to read a pressure gauge) and that the extinguisher is somewhere easy to reach near an exit, not behind boxes. If a neighbour or relative has a spare key, tell them where it is. See where to keep a fire extinguisher at home.

10. Leave your number with someone nearby

Give your phone number to a trusted neighbour, your guardhouse or your building management, and make sure they know to call 999 first if they see or smell smoke, then you. That one conversation is often what turns a small fire into a contained one.

For the Drive Itself

Balik kampung often means a long drive with a full car. A 1kg extinguisher in the car covers you on the road too. The 1kg ABC extinguisher + FF Flex-Mount bundle (RM70) mounts under the passenger seat or in the boot so it doesn't roll around. Here's how to install it in your vehicle.

Missing Something on the List?

If this checklist showed you don't have a working smoke detector or an extinguisher at home, the simplest fix is a ready-made setup. Our home fire safety bundles are sized to your home, or you can start with the FF Smoke Detector PLUS (RM79) and a 1kg ABC extinguisher (RM52). Frequently Asked Questions

Should I switch off the main switch before balik kampung?

Unplugging appliances is the essential step. Switching off the main switch also cuts power to your fridge and any security system or CCTV, so many households switch off only the circuits they don't need instead. Whatever you choose, deal with any DB box that's been tripping or showing burn marks before you leave.

Is it safe to leave the fridge on when I'm away for a week?

Generally yes, as long as it's plugged directly into a wall socket in good condition, not an extension or adaptor, and the plug and socket show no signs of overheating.

Can I leave my phone or e-scooter charging while I'm away?

No. Lithium batteries can overheat and catch fire without warning, and nobody will be there to notice. Unplug every charger before you leave.

Will a smoke detector alert me if there's a fire while I'm away?

A standalone smoke detector sounds locally; it doesn't call your phone. Its value in an empty house is giving neighbours, guards or anyone nearby an early warning, so make sure someone close by has your number and knows to call 999.

Who should I call if a neighbour's house is on fire while they're away?

Call 999 first, then the owner if you have their number. Don't try to enter a burning house.
