Lithium-Ion vs. Regular Fires: Why the Rules Change

To the naked eye, fire is fire. But for a safety professional, the difference between a kitchen grease fire and a burning e-bike battery is the difference between a simple "smothering" task and a complex chemical event. Understanding these differences is the first step in staying safe.

1. The Fuel Source: Chemistry vs. Combustion

Regular Fires (Class A, B, C)

Class A, B, and C fires represent common fire types: Class A involves ordinary combustibles (wood, paper), Class B involves flammable liquids (gasoline, oil), and Class C involves energized electrical equipment.

These rely on the Fire Triangle: Heat, Fuel, and Oxygen. If you remove just one element, such as oxygen by using a fire blanket or ABC dry powder fire extinguisher, the fire dies.

Li-ion Fires & The Fire Tetrahedron: Li-ion fires are best explained by the Fire Tetrahedron, which adds a fourth element: the chemical chain reaction.

Unlike a regular fire, a battery in Thermal Runaway does not need external oxygen to keep burning.

The internal chemical reactions produce their own heat and oxygen. Because the "Chemical Reaction" side of the tetrahedron is self-sustaining, traditional "smothering" methods that only target external oxygen will fail.

2. Thermal Runaway: The Unstoppable Cycle

Thermal runaway occurs when a cell's internal temperature triggers a self-sustaining chemical reaction.

The Chain Reaction: One failing cell generates intense heat, triggering the neighboring cell in a domino effect.

The Heat Factor: While a house fire averages around 600°C, a Li-ion battery fire can exceed 1,000°C. This intense heat can melt standard safety equipment.

Fire Blankets: Kitchen vs. Lithium-ion / EV

Warning!
A kitchen blanket will likely melt or burn through within seconds of contact with a Li-ion fire. As shown in research, standard blankets cannot withstand the "blowtorch" effect of a venting battery cell.

Ensure you have the right protection — view our Lithium-Ion Fire Blanket

FeatureRegular Kitchen Fire Blanket EV/Lithium-Ion Fire Blanket
Material Usually light fire-resistant fabric or fiberglass. Ceramic fibers or fiberglass specially coated with silicone/vermiculite.
Heat Rating Typically rated up to 500°C. Rated for continuous exposure over 1,000°C.
Primary Goal Extinguish by cutting off oxygen. Contain the fire, reduce radiant heat, and prevent spread.

Why a Blanket Over an Extinguisher?

While Li-ion specific extinguishers exist and can be effective for exposed cells, they often struggle with larger devices like e-bikes or EVs.

The Protection Barrier
Most high-capacity batteries are encased in heavy-duty metal boxes or plastic containers.

Access Issues
The extinguishing agent often cannot reach the internal cells where the chemical reaction is happening because the casing blocks it.

The Solution
This is why we recommend a specialized fire blanket for containment. Instead of trying to reach a hidden fire with an extinguisher, the blanket isolates the vehicle, protecting the surrounding area while the battery safely "burns itself out".

Fire TypeBest Safety Item Why?
Kitchen/Grease Kitchen Fire BlanketCheap and effective at cutting oxygen.
E-Bike/Laptop Li-ion Fire Blanket Engineered textiles withstand the "blowtorch" effect of venting cells.
Electric Car EV Fire Blanket Isolates the vehicle to protect nearby buildings.

Beware of Re-ignition!
Lithium-ion fires are notorious for re-igniting hours or even days after they appear extinguished.

This is because the internal chemical reaction can continue silently under the surface.

Don't Peek: If you’ve used a fire blanket, leave it in place. Removing it early can introduce external oxygen and cause a flare-up.

Quarantine: Contact BOMBA to have the device moved outdoors to a safe distance from structures. It remains a threat until it is professionally removed and disposed.

Tips for Readers

Never ignore a "swollen" battery: A bloated phone or laptop is in a pre-runaway state—dispose of it at a specialist facility immediately.

Right Tool, Right Job: Use kitchen blankets for fat fires, but invest in a specialized Li-ion blanket if you own an e-bike or other portable EV.

Evacuate First: Li-ion fires produce highly toxic hydrofluoric acid gas. If you hear hissing or see smoke, get everyone out and call the fire department.
