How to Create a Home Fire Evacuation Plan in 6 Simple Steps

Imagine waking up at 2am to a fire alarm going off in your home. Do you know exactly what to do? Do the people you live with? If the answer is uncertain, you are not alone — and that is exactly why having a plan matters. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), home fires in the US make up only 23% of all reported fires — yet they cause 75% of all civilian fire deaths. The place you feel safest is statistically where a fire is most likely to kill. And once your smoke alarm sounds, you may have as little as 90 seconds to get out safely.

The good news? A simple home evacuation plan — made in advance, shared with your family, and practised regularly — can make all the difference.

A home evacuation plan is a clear set of actions agreed upon by everyone in your household before an emergency ever happens.

Why You Need One (And Why Most People Don't Have It)

Many Malaysians assume they'll figure it out when the time comes. But fire behaves differently from what most of us expect. Smoke fills a room fast, visibility drops, and familiar spaces become disorienting in seconds.

It is also worth knowing that not every fire situation calls for the same response. The NFPA notes that residents of high-rise and apartment buildings sometimes face a different challenge — depending on where the fire is, evacuating may not always be the safest call. The comparison table below will help you understand what applies to your home type.

Where Does It Apply?  Landed House vs. Condo — Key Differences

Your home type matters a lot when building your evacuation plan. Here's how the two differ:

-High-Rise Residential building
Landed House
Primary exitMain house door → StaircaseFront/back door
Secondary exitStay in the house if corridor is full of smoke*
Windows
Never doUse the lift
Jump from upper floors
Meeting pointBuilding’s assembly point
End of street

*If smoke is too thick in the corridor, don't evacuate — close, seal your door gap and signal from a window for help. This "defend in place" approach is recommended by the Malaysian Fire Protection Association (MFPA) for modern high-rise buildings. Be sure to call BOMBA or 999!

Additionally, If your bedroom windows have grilles, make sure everyone in the household knows where the key is kept.

How to Build Your Plan: Step by Step
Now that you know what kind of plan you need, here is how to actually put one together. Follow these six steps to create a plan that is clear, complete, and ready to use.

Step 1: Draw your floor plan with the main header

Steps to an Effective Evacuation Plan

Having a plan is a great start — but it only works if it is visible, understood, and practised. The steps below are designed to make sure that when the moment comes, everyone in the household knows exactly what to do.

Step 1: Print few copies of the final plan and display them around the house
Place copies in visible spots around the home — bedroom doors, the kitchen, and near the main entrance are good starting points. For high-rise residents, include your floor number and the nearest stairwell on the plan. Keeping it visible means everyone is reminded of it, not just during a drill.

Step 2: Understand the roles and needs of individuals in the house
Not everyone in the household can evacuate the same way. Identify who may need assistance — young children, elderly members, or anyone with a medical condition — and assign someone to be responsible for them. Make sure everyone else knows their escape route and the agreed meeting point.

Step 3: Conduct an evacuation drill at least once a year
A plan that has never been practised is just a piece of paper. Run a full drill at least once a year, walk every escape route, and take note of anything that slows the process down. Update the plan if anything in your home layout or household has changed.
As part of your drill, test your smoke detector so that everyone in the household knows exactly what the alarm sounds like and can react immediately when they hear it. If you have the FF Smoke Detector PLUS, its interconnection feature means triggering one unit will set off all connected units simultaneously — making it a great way to simulate a real alarm across the entire home during your drill. Step 4: Practice the use of the fire safety items together
Knowing where your fire extinguisher and fire blanket are is only half the job — everyone should know how to use them. Walk through the basics as a household: how to operate an extinguisher using the PASS technique (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep), how to deploy a fire blanket, and how to test your smoke detectors. Familiarity in a calm moment makes all the difference in a real one.

If you are looking for a reliable extinguisher for home use, our 3kg ABC Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher can handle fires involving solids, liquids, gases, and electrical sources — making it suitable for most household fire scenarios. [Get it here]

For kitchen fires specifically, keep an  FF Fire Blanket within easy reach. It can smother a small fire quickly, and if you ever need to help someone escape through smoke, it can be used to cover them as well. [Get it here]

A Few Final Things to Remember

Get low if there's smoke. Crawl close to the floor — the air is cleaner there.

Check doors before opening
. Use the back of your hand to feel the door. If it's hot, don't open it — use another route or stay put.

Close doors behind you as you leave. A closed door can slow the spread of fire and smoke significantly, buying more time for others.

Once you're out, stay out. Do not re-enter for any reason — not for pets, not for documents, not for anything. Inform BOMBA if someone is still inside.

Fire safety isn't about living in fear — it's about being prepared so that fear doesn't take over when it matters most. An hour spent today creating and practicing your plan could be the most important thing you do for your family this year.

Start now. Your family is worth it.
