IS YOUR EXTINGUISHER CONDEMNED
OR JUST NEEDS A SERVICE?
Fire extinguishers, they’re tough, they’re tested to withstand more than 69 bars of pressure , +60 degrees celcius, and last up to 10 years for commercial purposes as per the (Malaysian Standard) MS1539 Part 3. But they’re not invincible. Due to the purpose and function of fire extinguishers, the placement of these equipment can vary from being placed in a cozy, air-conditioned room to a damp, hot factory. Which is why there are a few guidelines as to how and where to place extinguishers in business premises.
Fire extinguishers, as governed by Bomba Malaysia, need to be serviced yearly by a Competent Person (we are one!) or replaced (when it has reached the lifespan of 10 years or deemed ‘condemned’)
So, how can you tell that the fire extinguisher has reached the end of its life (condemned) or it just needs a service? We’ve sold millions of fire extinguishers since 1974 and serviced millions more.
Here are some signs that a fire extinguisher needs to be replaced:
1. Damage to the Cylinder
Includes visible signs of physical damage, such as dents, corrosion, or leakage. Damage to the cylinder will lead to a high chance of the contents of the extinguishers being compromised, hence not being effective to put out fires.
2. Rust or Corrosion
A humid or corrosive environment can lead to rust, which in turn can cause important components to break, become inoperable, or worse lead to serious safety issues such as cylinder rupture.
3. Illegible Serial Number
Each fire extinguisher has a unique serial number at the ‘skirt’ of the extinguisher. This serial number is registered with Bomba Malaysia for the issuance of the Bomba License. If the serial number is illegible, the authorities cannot renew the Bomba License, hence making the extinguishers obsolete (condemned).
4. Over 10 years from Manufacturing Date
From the serial number, you can tell the age of manufacture. For example, if the APA Number is FF102019Y004990, the numbers 2019 denotes the year of manufacture. To check if the extinguishers are of age and due for a change, just add 10 years to the date of manufacture.
The above are some signs that your extinguishers need a replacement. If your extinguishers are less than 10 years old and do not show signs of any of the above, your extinguisher will only need a service & renewal of Bomba License.
If your extinguishers do show signs of the above, it is time to replace them and buy a new unit which you can do on our Online Store. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us via WhatsApp (we don’t bite!).
